An unexpected need to move or having to start a new job immediately in a new city can be extremely stressful, especially when it comes to having to find an apartment. One way to relieve the stress is by searching for short term lease apartments. The flexibility of how long you have to stay and the amenities that many short term apartments offer make them an attractive and useful option, but if you don't what you're looking for, short term apartments may be difficult to find.

An unexpected need to move or having to start a new job immediately in a new city can be extremely stressful, especially when it comes to having to find an apartment. One way to relieve the stress is by searching for short term lease apartments. The flexibility of how long you have to stay and the amenities that many short term apartments offer make them an attractive and useful option, but if you don't what you're looking for, short-term apartments may be difficult to find.

The traditional short-term apartment lease typically lasts 12 months; however, a short-term lease is significantly shorter, most run about three to six months. A short-term lease includes all of the same rights for tenants that a traditional annual lease carries. There are many of reasons why short-term leases exist: the former tenants may have exited their lease earlier than expected, a landlord may have a tenant lined up for the apartment but the tenant isn't moving in for a few months so the landlord will try to fill the gap, or if the landlord is planning on selling the property so that the new landlord isn't restricted by a long lease.

There is also a very unique area of short-term apartments known as corporate housing. Corporate housing specifically targets professionals who have to relocate immediately, or just for a short period of time by providing almost everything they need. Corporate housing are furnished apartments meant as an alternative to extended hotel, providing a more “at home” feel for professionals.

One of the main hubs for finding corporate housing and short-term leases is the Web site CorporateHousing.com. CorporateHousing.com is an extensive apartment search engine, utilizing nearly ten of the most popular corporate housing services such as: Oakwood Temporary Housing, Churchill Corporate Housing, Foxwood Corporate Apartments, AVE and ARK Korman apartment residences, and a handful of others. Using CorporateHousing.com allows for you to either search by City, or browse through the property companies individually. The search by city is the most useful, as it gathers complete listings from all of the properties that are listed on the site in relative area to your search city versus selecting the partnered properties will redirect you to their select postings. The most valuable tool that CorporateHousing.com offers is its “relocation Center” tab: it offers credit check links, furniture rental listings, storage unit prices and moving quotes. It is a one stop shop for help for anyone moving on short notice.

Another helpful site when it comes to short term apartments is HousingHelpers.com. HousingHelpers has a “Temporary Housing” tab that details tips on finding short-term housing and the best steps to take on finding the best short-term situation for you. It lists advice on vacation rentals, furnished apartments, intern housing, corporate housing, disaster housing, and many more. HosingHelpers does include a search engine for temporary housing but it is limited to Colorado and Las Vegas, yet when starting out for looking for short-term apartments, the advice listed on HousingHelpers is vital.

One of the major players in apartment rental postings is apartments.com, and when it comes to temporary housing it offers an individual and specialized search engine for corporate and temporary apartments. The search works by allowing the user to select the state and then city regions apartments.com offers short-term or corporate housing listings. The downside to the apartments.com listings is that they are limited to specific regions (e.g. in California listings are limited the southern California) and that per region there are not many results, but unlike more sites an email registration is not required.

Searching for short-term apartments requires a whole different strategy than regular apartment hunting because postings are difficult to come by, most are furnished, and can be restricted to certain regions. Yet, if the correct tools and Web sites are used, the hunt for short-term apartments can not seem so daunting.

Do renter's rights differ for those leasing short term or month to month? Are tenants of short term rentals subject to not receiving equal benefits as normal lease tenants?
